Shopping in the Old Market District offers a getaway from the big box stores. The Old Market is filled with one-of-a-kind and boutique shops, cafes and many bars and restaurants. Store hours vary but most open by 10 AM and close around 9 PM. Cafes usually close around 9 PM, restaurants range from 10 PM to midnight (depending on the day of the week), and majority of the bars are open until 2 AM.

During the Christmas holiday, carolers fill the air with singing and good cheer throughout the main streets and Gene Leahy Mall. There are four main public school districts in Omaha: District 66, Elkhorn Public Schools, Millard Public Schools, and Omaha Public Schools. All these districts have multiple elementary, middle and high schools. Each offers a different teaching atmosphere for students. Some schools specialize in certain areas of study, such as fine arts, trade, math and science. Millard Public Schools offers an International Baccalaureate program, starting in elementary school and continuing through high school. There are several private schools within Omaha as well. The schools in this area rate tops in testing scores. There are also approximately 12 colleges and universities in the Omaha area.
